I met her in a shopping centre. She was dressed in a pair of jeans and T-shirt like any Singaporean leenager. I did not suspect anything unusual about her. But I did have a close look at her eyes and they. Showed me a sort of defiance that I had not seen in anyone else. She seemed strange as she walked about as if hiding from someone. I could not help staring at her.

Then suddenly out of nowhere two men came Upon her. They pounced upon her and tried to drag ler away, but she broke free and ran. She ran towards me and I realised that I had to do something. She passed me and ran up the steps. As one of her pursuers ran passed I tripped him and he fell heavily. The other one ran past and I grabbed at him. He turned on me with a snarl and I belted him. By this time his friend had got up and the chase was on. Then I realised that the girl had returned to rescue me and was involved in a karate match with her assailant. I made short work of my opponent as it was obvious that he was just a hired thug. He fell heavily and I turned to help the girl. She did not need any help. I saw her deliver a chop to the man’s neck and he fell like a sack of potatoes. Before I could say anything, she grabbed me by the hand and led me away. We did not stop running until we were far away from the shopping centre.

When we caught our breath I led her to a stall as I needed a drink. She told me with a smile that she was a princess and that she was there to attend the National Day Parade on behalf of her country. I just laughed at the joke she was trying to pull. Then we chatted for a while and I found her to be an interesting person. Yes, she did have a foreign accent but I just thought that it was either a put on or that she was educated abroad. After the drink, she left and took my telephone number and address with her. She refused to give me her name so I called her ‘Princess’. She seemed to like it. She promised to call me soon and left.

She did not call me the next few days and I let it go at that. Then it was National Day and I got the shock of my life. There seated on a VIP seat right beside the First Lady was the girl. I swallowed hard and turned to my sister and was about to tell her when I realised that I would be wasting my time. If ever there was a skeptic it was my sister. She would have laughed to death.

I am still waiting for my princess to call me one day. Will she?
