Write a story based on the following: It was a hot night, but I felt cold all over.

THE FIGHT

I was awake the whole night. It was a hot night, but I felt cold all over. The next day would be my day of reckoning. It was the day when I would be either prove my manhood or die in the attempt. To make matters worse, Maxus was not going to be there to encourage me. It would make a difference to me if he was; but he was engaged in a job in another part of the arena.

I had seen my opponent before. He was man of gigantic build and he had the reputation of having killed half a dozen men in the arena. The news that came to me said that he was out to kill me. Caesar had promised to make him a free man if he could kill one more man in the ring. Such was the lot of the gladiators that though we were all slaves, we were enemies to each other. We became enemies because of our intention of staying alive and if possible of escaping. I had been well trained and the chief trainer had said that I was the best student he had ever trained. If anyone could killed the Gaul it was I; that was why I had been chosen.

When dawn broke, I looked up at the sky and prayed to Sol my ancestral God. I asked him to give me the strength to stay alive and to go home to my wife and children. As soon as I finished my prayers the master came in to give me last minute advice. He told me to concentrate on the stomach of my opponent; that was his weakness. I was also warned to keep away from his grip. he had been known to grip his opponents to death by crushing their ribs!

Before long, I found myself in the arena. My opponent and I circled each other. I was wary but my opponent was obviously full of confidence; he spat contemptuously on the floor. Then he rushed upon me. I darted away quickly. Then I caught him from behind. He threw me away as if I was an annoying child. As I lay on the ground he leapt; I rolled away and he landed flat on the ground. I leapt to my feet followed by my opponent. His nose was broken and he bled profusely. With a terrible scream he charged at me. I leapt into the air and landed a mighty kick on his stomach. He fell again and lay still. The crowd roared its approval. The referee came near to look and was satisfied that my opponent had indeed been beaten. Then I turned to bow to Caesar. He threw a dagger a my feet; a signal to finish off my opponent.

I turned and saw him stirring. The crowd roared telling me to kill. I took the dagger and then threw it on the ground. I knew the consequences of disobeying Caesar; the archers would shoot me down. The crowd kept quiet at this point; waiting for Caesar’s decision. But on this occasion, Caesar seemed to have been in a generous mood. He put up his hand to halt the archer from his duty. I bowed low and then went to help my opponent to his feet. Together we walked out of the arena —friends forever. I was surprised at what I saw. Two tear drops were rolling slowly down his cheeks.
