I had left it for only a moment, to wash myself. When I returned, it was gone. It was not really a valuable ring but it had been given to me by my mother and to me it was priceless. I was furious as it became clear to me that it had to be one of my men. We were on jungle patrol at the time and had set up our base camp near a river.

I assembled them altogether and went through their belongings and their persons. Of course I found nothing. Whoever had stolen my ring had hidden it too well. I proceeded to lecture them for an hour about the evils of stealing from their comrades and then dismissed them. My problems did not end there. Over the next few days, there were a few thefts. Items missing were rings and watches. Whoever the thief was, he was not interested in cash. I felt helpless. The men too were getting restless and among the rumours circulating were not a few about ghosts.

Then one day I had a lead. Someone found a watch against a tree. It was smashed as if it had been thrown fom a height. That set me thinking for a while. I was ure that the thief, whoever he was, would not have climbed a tree to throw down his loot — especially if here was no chance of him being caught. I looked up at the tree and suddenly spotted something. I became excited and sent for my runner — Jumaat. He was a kampong boy and good at climbing. I pointed to a nest high up in the tree and asked him to go and look at it for me.

He went up the tree like a professional and was down in a few minutes. He gave me the loot. I looked and then called the men together. They looked at the jtems and one by one found all their lost belongings. Our thief had been the feathered kind. Everyone burst out laughing except the poor chap who had lost his watch. Since his watch had been the clue to the whole thing the men set up a collection to buy him a new watch.
