I had been fishing the whole night and had caught nothing. It was enough to make any fisherman furious and I was. Then as I was packing up to go, I heard someone swimming to my right. I looked and saw the head of a woman. I thought that she must be one of those rich city types who had nothing to do and so came to the island once a year, in search of excitement. I was too tired to care and carried on packing.
“Excuse me sir,” she said so I turned. “I need your help,” she continued. As there was despair in her voice, I became attentive. She swam nearer to me and remaining in the water told me a sad story about how her daughter had been kidnapped by a fisherman. She said that it happened just ten metres from where I was. The fisherman was drunk and asleep and I could help free her daughter. I agreed. I was sure I could handle a drunk. I told her to lead on and she swam along the bank, while I walked along it.
Sure enough we came upon an old gent in a drunken stupor. Silently she pointed to a large tank where the man had placed her daughter. I looked in and saw a litle girl in it. She was up to her neck in water and looked frightened. I reached into the tank and lifted her out – and noticed that she had a tail like a fish. She held on to me and sobbed. I was too stunned to say anything. I could not believe my eyes. I always thought that they existed only in legends. But here I was holding a little mermaid in my arms and talking to another one in the water. I recovered from my initial shock and without a word reunited mother and daughter. The mother hugged and kissed the daughter. “Thank you kind sir,” they said in unison. “Don’t tell anyone that you saw us,” said the mother. I smiled. “Who will believe me?” I asked. Then both of them blew kisses at me and dived into the water and disappeared.
