Write a story containing the sentence, ‘I raised my stick and looked at them.’

It was a witch who gave it to me. Only I did not know that she was a witch.

I was in the habit of helping women in distress — especially old women. This one lived alone on the path to my house. I befriended her when she lost her cat. When she was looking for it, she came to my garden. We got talking and I went to look for the animal. I found it on a tree, too afraid to climb down. Putting aside my ladylike virtues for a while, I climbed the tree and got the cat down. The old lady was pleased and I adopted her as my ‘Gran’ almost immediately. She also took to me as if I was her own granddaughter. So now on the way back from school, I used to stop and chat.

Then one day, people began to be robbed along the path to our homes. Then it was that Gran gave me the stick. She also told me to point it at people who try to hurt me. I was puzzled but accepted her gift anyway. The next day, as I was going to school I was attacked A man just came and grabbed me from behind and another stood in front and asked for all my money. I was scared but managed to struggle free. I had the stick in my hand. I raised my stick and looked at them. Suddenly they froze and stood still. I left them like that and called the police. They stood like that until the police came and handcuffed them. I raised my stick again and they could move. The police took them away. I am not sure who were more puzzled, the robbers or the police.

“I am a witch,” said Gran. “I am going to teach you everything I know.”
