Write a story entitled ‘The Hunt’

I was the head of the hunters. It was our job to hunt down any animal that had turned into a man eater. The last time this happened was a year ago. So I had not been hunting for some time now, and nor had my men. They sat around everyday and played cards. Then one day it happened.

We received orders from headquarters that there was a man eating tiger in the area. We were to hunt it down. It was wounded and dangerous. I learnt later that it had been wounded in a trap which had been laid by poachers. I hated the job. In fact I would rather have hunted down the poachers than the tiger. It was their fault and now I had to kill a magnificent animal. I called out the men, gave them their orders and went out immediately

We arrived at the village and got up to date with the news. I borrowed a goat from the villagers and led the way. My men were excited. Soon we came upon tiger tracks. We built a tent and camouflaged it with a lot of twigs. Then we hid ourselves and waited. Outside we tied the goat and all of us trained our rifles at the ready. It was night and my men sat down to cards again. I yelled at them to get ready. They had never done it before and were sure that they knew what to do. I was an experienced hunter and I was scared.

It was carly morning when I heard the goat bleating away. I knew at once that the tiger was near. The goat probably had smelt it. I aimed the rifle at the goat and waited. Sure enough the tiger limped into view. It was a huge magnificent animal and I felt sorry for what I was about to do. I aimed at its head and gently squeezed the trigger. It leapt into the air and fell down and lay still. I was glad that its end was painless.
