Write a story that ends: Finally, after all those years, peace was restored.

PEACE AT ANY PRICE

A million men had died and the war continued for the seventh year. It was a good thing that both sides did not have modern weapons, or there would have been more deaths. Because of the war effort too, the people were living in poverty. Then was born an unlikely situation.

The religious leaders from both sides met secretly to see how the war could be ended. Dominated for centuries by the politicians, the religions had been weak and useless. Now, because of the prolonged war, people were getting disillusioned with the governments and were turning to the Gods again. With renewed support from the people, the religious leaders became stronger and decided to involve themselves; to stop the war. The religious leaders on both sides began to get in touch with each other – secretly— and acted jointly. They began to appeal to their countries’ leaders to make peace. However their efforts proved fruitless. No one listened.

It was a young monk who had a brilliant idea one day. He confided it to his Abbot and the idea traveled on to the top levels. At a secret meeting the religious leaders of both sides took a firm decision. The date for their drastic action was fixed on a certain Monday — their day of prayer.

A moving scene took place at the war front. Just after the artillery of both forces had completed their ranging,early in the morning, several buses drew up behind the lines. Then at a signal from organizers of the protests, women and children — hundreds of thousands of them—began walking towards the front! Naturally the warriors were shocked when they saw women and children on the enemy side. Then before they could recover from the shock, they saw that women and children from their own side were also moving into the battle area.

The shocked warriors threw down their weapons and ran forward to restrain their women and children. But there were too many of them and they marched on. The warriors were helpless and could do nothing but stand still and look. The women and the children from both sides met in the center, watched by their shocked menfolk. The marchers stood still and stared at each other for a few moments and then with wild yells they ran towards each other and, when they met, began embracing wildly! Then the soldiers left their posts, threw down their weapons and moved into action. Wild embraces followed by tears of happiness on every face. All enmity was forgotten. Each side began dressing the wounds of the other. Tears of sorrow mixed with tears of happiness and flowed nonstop the whole day.

Finally, after all those years, peace was restored.
