A SENSE OF SHAME

“That is the man responsible for the ruin of our family,” said Mrs Grant as she pointed Sonny out to Hawkins. “On the night your father disappeared, he said that he was going to visit Sonny. He never came back.I suspect that Sonny murdered your father.

“But Sonny is a police inspector,” said Hawkins.

“Huh!,” said his mother, “he is a disgrace to the force. He was good friends with your father. Your father was a gentleman. He was rich and Sonny was secretly jealous of him. He framed your father and got him into trouble with the law, Then he tried to get money from your father by blackmailing him. Your father refused to pay and on the night your father disappeared he confided in me that he was afraid of Sonny.”

“Did you ever talk to Sonny after that?” asked Hawkins.

His mother shook her head. “He tried to talk to me many times,” she said. “He claimed that he had a lot to tell me but I refused to listen to him. I was not going to listen to the man who murdered my husband.” Hawkins listened while his mother poured forth her hatred of the man. Then he made a firm resolution. He would avenge his father, or die in the attempt. He did not remember his father at all as he had been only eight when all this had happened.

That night he decided to do what he felt was the only reason for his living. In the middle of the night he crept into the bungalow of the police inspector. Everything was pitch dark. He saw that the door was open and walked in. He tried the doors one by one and saw Sonny sleeping in one of the rooms. He was alone. Obviously his wife slept in another room. Hawkins was no coward and did not believe in killing a man in cold blood. He switched on the light and the inspector woke with a start. ”Hawkins!” he said recognizing the intruder instantly. Hawkins pointed the revolver at him and said, “This is to avenge my father.”

Quick as a flash Sonny responded and kicked the revolver out of Hawkins’s hand and it landed in a corner of the room. Before Hawkins could make a move he found himself staring down the barrel of a police service revolver. “I want to show you a few things,” said the inspector calmly. Then he got up and pulled out a photo album from the shelf. He lay it on the bed and began turning the pages; inviting Hawkins to look.

To his horror Hawkins saw a series of newspaper clippings of criminal activities. The clippings were from the newspaper of a foreign country. In everyone of them was his father’s photograph. “I did not want to show this to your mother or to you; it will only hurt both of you.Your father is not dead. In the early days he was a criminal here, then he fled the country. Now he is carrying out his activities in a foreign country. He has left you and your mother, Hawkins. In fact he has married again,” said Inspector Sonny with deep regret in his voice.

Hawkins stared in shock as the pages were turned one by one. He had never felt so ashamed in his life.
