Write a story using a “Tree as the Background”

We were told that the tree was a thousand years old. We calculated that in that case, it must have been around before even the age of exploration. That made it a very special tree. It was a banyan tree and occupied an area nearly as large as half the football field. One day we tried and found out that more than 500 of us could hide in it. That was some tree.

Then Catherine made a remarkable discovery. She discovered that the tree could talk. Well, not actually talk like we do. But what it could do was give out the messages that it had stored in its memory. Catherine began to get flashes of what was known to be history. It was also discovered that she had to sit in the shade of the tree and tune in to it. When she did, she started to rattle off whatever the tree knew — as if the tree spoke through her. All we needed to do was record what Cathy said on a cassette recorder and we had all the information we wanted.

We gathered a lot of information in this way. Since it had witnessed history in the making, the tree could give us all the information that took place in its time. We have now come out with volumes of history that will astound the world. We have names, places and exact words that had been spoken by Napoleon and Raffles and other historical persons. Nothing seems to be hidden from the banyan tree.

We look forward to unraveling a lot more. This also makes us think. There are other trees all over the world. If we would only listen, how much can they teach us?
