REGRET

It was not easy to look back; but Emma did. She regretted everything, and wondered, “Is it too late now?” The thought of being independent and by herself; with no one to check her and tell her what to do; no one to tell her what was right and what was wrong had appealed to her. She had planned everything. Her running away from home had not been one of those adventures that bored teenagers embarked on to attract attention; it had been real. She had wanted to start her own life; away from her prudish family.

Things went well for the first few months. She had met Harry in her first month of freedom. He was a free soul like herself and taught her how to survive in this strange new country. She saw, and made use of, many opportunities of getting what she needed without paying or working for them. She managed to get forged papers that made her one of the citizens of the vast country. The authorities were relaxed and did not really bother to investigate into her past. In a country which did not have many people, no employer bothered to ask if she was a citizen. They were happy to get someone, anyone, who was willing to work for them.

She looked about at the drab conditions of her studio apartment. The apartment was untidy and she realised guiltily that she had picked up some of Harry’s habits. Unpleasant memories of the man crossed her mind; when she realised that all that he had done was make use of her. He had left her when he had met a fresh new prospect. Too late she realised that he was a lazy man who just wanted the women in his life to work and support him and to love him. When she had begun grumbling that he should work to help the finances, he had just gone out and found another woman to support him. He had not even bothered to say good bye; he had just left the apartment when she had been at work.

In despair she thought of the beautiful, organised life she had left behind. Memories of the quiet dignity of her father and the sweet smile of her mother came through into her mind, despite all she did to fight them off. She realised that it had been a year since she had left them. Would she be welcome back home? She lay in bed a long time and then reached for her telephone and rapidly punched a number: “I want a one way ticket On the next plane to Singapore,” she said. Then she lay back in bed and let the tears flow.
