Write a story which contains the words ‘My wife was nervous as usual. I grumbled and got up’

We were on a photographic trip when it happened. We were sleeping, my wife and I, in a tent in the middle of the forest. We had a hard day ahead of us and I was tired. Then someone woke me in the middle of the night. My wife was nervous as usual. I grumbled and got up.She insisted that she heard a noise and asked me to investigate. I was half asleep but reached for the torchlight and the club and went out.

I heard a noise in the larder and was sure that it was an intruder. We needed that food to see us through the week. If it disappeared it meant that we have to spend one day going back to the village to get a resupply. That would be time consuming.

I walked in with my club raised and shining my torchlight. Whatever was in there was not afraid. I heard the falling pots and pans and it sounded like the proverbial ‘bull in the china shop’. As it turned out, it was not a bull but a bear. It looked directly at me. Then I heard a smaller sound. A cub was at its foot and whimpering. Then like any human baby would have done it ran and hid behind its mother and looked at me from there. The she bear looked at me. It looked sad and hungry. I stared at it for a while and then said, “Heck!” and went back to my sleeping tent.

“What was it?” asked my wife sleepily.

“Nothing, only a mother looking for food for her

Baby,” I said.

“Oh?” she said half sleepily and went back to sleep. I didn’t think she heard what I said. I smiled to myself when I thought how she would react when she looked into the larder the next morning.
