Write a story with the title ‘Lost’

At one time when we were recruits on jungle patrol, something ‘terrible’ happened. We were lost. Now in the jungle getting lost is serious business but we need not have worried so much if night had not fallen.

The first indication we had that all was not as it should be was when Clement pointed out that we were supposed to be near a stream and were not. All of us look out our maps and poured over it. After about fifteen minutes we concluded that Clem was right. We had missed the stream. Now in the jungle, streams do not disappear. As the appointed patrol leader, it was my responsibility so I got on the radio and informed the commander that we were lost. I could almost hear him cursing at the other end. Then, as it was getting dark he ordered us to stay where we were and continue next day. I ordered the men to make camp. They grumbled but obeyed. We starved that night as there was no food.

We did not sleep much as we were anxious. We woke up with the dawn and poured over the maps again and then we saw someone coming through the trees. We thought that perhaps the commander had sent out a rescue team of NCOs. It was not: It was a bread seller, with two baskets of goodies cream slung over his shoulders! We had been camping only 50 metres from the main road.
