I looked at my watch. It showed that I had been away from my home for only ten minutes. Yet the calendar on the wall showed that it was one month later. Somehow I had arrived in the future. I had been warned about this. The professor told me again and again that it was dangerous to fool around with time travel. But then, I wanted to see for myself what was possible and what not. It was not enough for me to have book knowledge.
Looking for my wife, I wandered all over the house. She was nowhere to be found. I looked at the tiny device in my hand. It was what connected me to my own time. All I had to do was to press a switch and I would be back. I decided to take the professor’s advice and pressed the switch. What I had been afraid of happened. Nothing. I did not move at all and remained in the same time. I was lost in time.
I tried the switch again and again and still I stood there. Then I heard voices. It was my wife and son. They were returning from somewhere. They walked in quietly and stood looking out the window. Strangely enough they looked sad and fantastically enough they did not see me. I called out to them. They did not hear me either. Then I began to realise. For some reason I was not there. Then my wife and son walked away and I followed them. As I passed the hall, suddenly I realised that there was a photo of me on the wall. The strange thing was that there were flowers on it — indicating that I was dead!
I knew I was not dead. I was standing there. They could not see me. How did I die? The question kept coming back to me. I felt afraid. Then my son asked his mother, “Will Daddy come back mother?” “No,” she answered, “he will not. He disappeared suddenly. The professor says that he is lost in time. He is here with us but in another time and we cannot see him. Maybe one day he will find his way back. Come son, it is time for dinner.”
I sat down with my head in my hands, not knowing what to do.
