Write about a camping trip.

Never camp overnight in a place where there are few humans. I learnt this lesson when a group of us camped on an island around Singapore. During the day, there were a lot of people picnicking on the island, so the mosquitoes had more people to draw blood from. When night fell, all the picnickers were gone and that left only seven of us on the island. This meant the poor mosquitoes had only seven people to bite. So they gave us hell.

It was Albert’s idea. He said that if you want to catch fish and other marine creatures like crabs, you had to stay overnight on the island. Day time was too noisy and there were too many people about. Fish do not bite when they hear noise and so on. We took the bait, so to speak. But contrary to everything that Albert said, nothing happened. We caught exactly one fish and it was a cat fish. We were afraid of handling it as we knew that these chaps carried nasty stings. The only thing left to do was to cut the line and let the fish go. We did. As for the crabs they were in great numbers but we found that they were not the edible type. Someone suggested that we should drown Albert and it seemed like a good idea except that it was not legal.

We sat up the whole night swatting mosquitoes and in the early morning, things took a turn for the worse – it started to rain. That put the fire out straight away. One small consolation though, the rain kept the mosquitoes away except for those trapped in the tent. We put an end to them soon.

When dawn broke it was a relief. We took the first boat out and spent the whole day next day recovering from the great camping trip. We slept the whole day and I even refused to answer the phone. That was my first and last camping trip ever.
