A FISHING TRIP

My Uncle Walter is a great fisherman. Since he had no son, I had to become his apprentice and go fishing with him whenever he wanted me to. He was my father’s elder brother so my father was bound not to refuse him permission to borrow his son. The side benefit of this arrangement was that I became a great fisherman too.

On the day in question, I was sleepy and would much rather have slept until 8:00 am — it being Sunday. But it was not to be. Uncle Walter was at my house by 6:00 am. I got ready fast, to avoid the wrath of my male parent, and got into the big fisherman’s car. We drove off to Pasir Ris. Strangely enough he appeared moody. I did not ask why but he explained. He said that my aunt had laughed at him as he left and had reminded him that the last time he had returned empty handed. She had said that they would have bad luck that day as well. Uncle Walter was a superstitious type and believed that her ‘curse’ would come true. I yawned.

It was uncanny, but we really did not catch any fish that day. It was amazing but other people at the pond had a good day. It looked as if the fish just did not want to be caught by us. The day dragged on and my uncle’s face got proportionately longer with the shadows. At about 5:00 pm, Uncle Walter was really furious. Then he said, “Im going to try just once more.If no luck we will go back.” Then he threw the line. Almost immediately, he got a bite. He jumped up in excitement and fought the fish and finally landed it. It was a whopper. Proudly we carried it out of the gate. Aunt Grace would be silent.

But something happened at the gate. We saw a woman who seemed very sad indeed. She looked at us longingly. We knew that her husband was in prison and that she always hung around the pond because the anglers sometimes gave her some of their fish, to take home and feed her hungry children. This was usually the case if the anglers caught many fish. For some reason, no one had given her any that day and she stood there empty handed and looking pathetic. Suddenly Uncle Walter made a decision: He gave her the fish. The woman was astounded, as she had probably never expected someone to give her such a big fish. She broke into a large smile which showed that she was extremely happy and grateful. I was silent and looked at Uncle Walter. We walked to his car and got in. “Wasn’t her smile worth the fish?” he asked. I agreed that it was.
