“Do alert the police if you have come across this man, he is a dangerous individual...armed with....” the policeman’s voice echoed from the television as I caught a glimpse of the face broadcasted on the screen as I darted into my room to get my bag in a rush. Just as I was about to slip on my shoes, my mother’s voice echoed from the kitchen to the living hall. “Remember to take care of yourself and watch out for your surroundings! You're so oblivious at times!” A crooked smile appeared on my lips as I realised that I needed that reminder. Being an extremely studious individual, I had a reserved personality. Clad with my old pair of round glasses that framed my oval face, I was usually found so deeply engrossed in books for hours.

I shouted back, ”Yes Ma!” and briskly skipped to my favourite bookstore that was a stone's throw away from our apartment. Upon arriving at the bookstore, I was enthused to discover newly arrived storybooks that were neatly stocked. I was overwhelmed by the rows of shelves of storybooks surrounding me. I felt like I was in my sanctuary. An unexplainable sense of thrill coursed through my veins as I saw the big sign “New Arrival - Deep World Comics” displayed at the very end of the bookstore. Letting my curiosity get the better of me, I headed there without any second thoughts.

Not being able to contain my bubbling excitement, my legs carried me as fast as they could and my arms reached out for the first book of the comic series like a programmed robot as I sank to the floor to dive into the comic. Within just thirty minutes, I was already half-way through the book. I became totally engrossed in the story plot to the point that I had absolutely no awareness of my surroundings. Little did I know, danger lurked around me.

A faint figure appeared before my vision but I couldn’t care less. Browsing through books, the figure neared me calmly. I was totally clueless as to who this stranger was. Completely unaware about my fate, I looked up while pinching the pages of the comic book, mid-turn, as the figure was standing right infront of me. Nothing could have prepared me for what might happen over the next few seconds...

Using his scrawny hands, the stranger slowly retrieved his pen-knife from his pocket. Its sharp blade was just a few inches away from me. I stared in horror as the blade glistened in the bookstore's fluorescent lights.

“Look out!”

I heard a familiar voice in the bookstore. I ducked away from the pen knife just as he was about to stab me in the nick of time. When I turned, I was facing Edward, my archenemy. The next few seconds left me in utter bewilderment.

Throwing himself onto the stranger with the pen-knife, he wrangled with him to take control of the pen-knife as I cowered away from the two bodies rolling on the floor. Edward was well-built and had a herculean structure. Furthermore, he had a black-belt in Taekwondo. Tackling the perpetrator to the ground and grabbing his two hands behind his back, he shouted “Help me out!” as he struggled to hold the perpetrator under his control.

Regaining my composure, I rushed to help Edward as we both held the man down while the store owner dialled the police hotline. Minutes later, after the police arrived and swiftly took control of the situation. They handcuffed the perpetrator and took him into the police car. A warm smile played on the policemen's lips as they thanked us for our heroic acts. The perpetrator was the accused whom the police had been looking for!

I then remembered his face on the screen. "Yes, that's him alright. What a relief he is caught!" I heaved a sigh of relief. "I will get you both!" The accused suddenly screamed from the police car window that was wound down. His blood-curdling voice and blood-shot eyes left everyone in terror before the policemen shoved him inside the car and wound up the car window to the top.

All my fears dissipated as relief engulfed me. “Don’t worry, he will not come for you again." Edward’s voice was like a calming soothing balm that sieved all the tension from my mind. Clasping my hands together, I dropped my head as low as the weight of reverence I felt towards him. "Thank you for saving my life", I muttered as I was overwhelmed with gratitude. "Hey I still don't like you, you know" Edward joked as he waved good-bye before riding off in his bicycle. I gushed as I could not think of a comeback in time. "Maybe I'll think of something when I see him again", I vowed as I ran home in sheer relief and eagerness to share the incident with my mother.

I truly developed a fear of reading books in the bookstore from that day onwards and avoided the sparsely crowded venue for many months. Being an avid reader is good but not being aware of my surroundings and safety is unacceptable. Reflecting on how my moment of excitement could have led to a disastrous consequence. I sighed in despair. Never again would I neglect my safety. As for Edward, we are no longer archenemies but definitely have grown to become book buddies.
