CHINESE NEW YEAR

Singapore is a country which has no less than ten new year celebrations during the year. I suppose this advantage comes out of being a multi-racial country. Of all the new year celebrations the Chinese New Year is the grandest and celebrated by the most number of people, because more than 70 percent of the people of Singapore are Chinese. Also, because it is a racial celebration rather than a religious one, Chinese Singaporeans, regardless of their religious beliefs, celebrate Chinese New Year.

The festival takes place somewhere between the third week of January and the second week of February. It is not possible to fix the date because it is based on the moon. That is why the festival is often called the Lunar New Year.

To Chinese Singaporeans, this is the most important festival of the year and they celebrate it for fifteen days. About a month before the New Year’s day, the preparations begin. Greeting cards are sent out and in every family everyone gets together to help in the spring cleaning. It is believed that the thorough cleaning of the house brings in good luck. Many families use this as an occasion to buy new curtains and some of them even purchase new furniture.

The celebrations begin with a family dinner on New Year’s Eve. It is wonderful to get the whole family to join together, and it emphasizes the importance that Chinese people lay on family unity. Immediately from the first day it is time for visiting and for receiving visitors. Relatives and friends who, sometimes, have not seen each other for a long time use the opportunity to renew their friendships. On these visits, gifts are also exchanged. It is customary to bring oranges. It is also customary for the elders to give gifts of cash to children. By the Chinese method of classification, anyone who is not married is entitled to receive such gifts and anyone who is married is expected to give them.

The festival ends on a high note on the fifteenth day, which is called ‘Chap Goh Meh’. But it takes about a month for the excitement to die down.
