A CULTURAL EVENT

Being in Singapore we are lucky to be exposed to so many cultures. Already we have four resident cultures and cultural shows all the year round. We also have shows which blend the four. If that is not enough, occasionally we get cultural events from other parts of the world. One Such show which impressed me very much was a series of cultural dances put up by some college students from Papua New Guinea.

When I arrived, a small crowd was standing in front of the stage at the World Trade Centre. I was surprised that there were so many people to see a series of ‘primitive’ cultural dances. Then I realised that one of the dances Would be done by girls who would be bare topped. I was a little embarrassed: Were my countrymen there because they wanted to see a cultural dance or just to see bare breasts? I was sure that most of them were not that cultural. As it turned out, I was absolutely wrong.

The dance of the bare breasted maidens was the first item on the programme and they received a warm response. I did not see anyone ogling. The spectators gave the performers due respect for their performance and I could swear that they really and truly appreciated the artistic aspects of the dance. I felt all warm and proud of my countrymen. I was happy that I had been wrong.

The next two items were by warriors and they literally shook the floor. The ferocity of the warriors was mesmerizing and anything but primitive. I could see that the dancers were seized by some sort of power that made them dance so ferociously. It was as if they were possessed. All of them were in a trance. Those of us who watched were carried away by the emotions that they expressed.

The last dance was a harvest dance and it showed the closeness with Nature that dominated all these people’s lives. They worshipped Nature and She in turn embraced them like the warm Mother that She is. The dancers danced beautifully and created in me a yearning to be like them – close and at one with Nature. When the programme ended, the applause was loud and long from an appreciative audience.
