Write about your first day at school.

I distinctly remember having cried on my first day at school. I am not writing about kindergarten because everyone cries at the kindergarten — sometimes every day. I am referring to my first day in primary school. My mother brought me to school, handed me over to the teacher and made to go away. I was worried. I was sure that she was abandoning me. To make matters worse, she was not even allowed to stand at the window. She did at kindergarten and that made me brave.

Almost immediately after my mother left, I started to cry. Then the guy sitting beside me followed suit and soon there were a few of us. The teacher was not to be compromised. She was obviously an old hand at handling cry babies. She knew exactly what to do: She ignored us. Soon we realised that we were not going to get our mothers back no matter what, and so settled down to some serious colouring. She interrupted our colouring only to call us one by one to stick something on our pockets. I learned later that it was my name. The tag on our pockets indicated that we belonged to Mrs. Foo, our teacher.

We were happy about one thing though. We all could speak to the teacher and she spoke English the way we did. We spent the whole day colouring. I thought school was fun, if this was what they were going to do the whole day. Our break in between was all right too. Ma was there with food. Not that I was hungry, but Ma was a welcome sight. It meant that it was ok, she had not abandoned me.

The end of the day came soon enough. We had coloured no less than ten pictures and brought them home to show our parents. I felt very grown up. I was in school.
