THE HAPPIEST DAY IN MY LIFE
It happened to both Fred and I at the same time but he suffered more. We were in the same taxi that met with the crash against the bus. Both of us were hospitalised side by side but I recovered after a day, but poor Fred did not. He was in a coma. I was sure he would be all right. The doctors did not think so.They were frank. They told Fred’s parents and I overheard every word. They told them that Fred had probably suffered brain damage and that people in that state seldom recovered. I did not give up hope. Fred’s mother came to see me and asked me how I was. I did not reply, I told her. “Aunty, Fred will be all right, you will see.” She broke down and cried and I did too and so did my mother.
Fred was my best friend. I had always felt that I would go through the whole of life with him. We had made our plans together. I was sure we would carry them out. In school I was lonely. Our other friends gathered around me. They were sympathetic and I appreciated it, but what made me mad at everyone was that none of them believed that Fred would be out of hospital soon and well. Only I believed that. I prayed hard. I knew that that was the answer. Fred and I did hot believe in any one religion, but we knew that there was a God and we loved and respected him. I prayed to Him now. I asked that my friend be retured to me.
Only his mother and I visited Fred everyday.Only we believed that he would recover. Fred laid like that for a morth. Pred’s mother spent the whole day at the hospital. I went to lospital everyday after school. I did my homework seated beside my friend. Then one day it happened. I was alone with him. Fred’s mother had gone down for a while. I stared hard at Fred and spoke to him. I asked him to come back. I begged him not to die. His eyes flickered. They opened for a while and closed again. He smiled. I yelled for the nurse and she yelled for the doctor. The doctor rushed in. He chased me out.
I don’t know what the doctors did. They were with him the whole night. Next day was a Saturday and I went to the hospital at 8:00 am. Fred’s mother was already there. She smiled at me and said, “Fred is conscious and getting better.” I gave her a hug. It was the happiest day of my life.
