The Flood

Singapore has always been blessed with moderate weather. As a result, we have seldom had any severe drought or floods. Hence it is news that on 13 June 1992 there were floods in several parts of the Republic.

The problem started on the day before, 12 June 1992, when the rain started to come down in torrents. Everyone welcomed the rain as it had not rained for a few weeks and the weather was hot and getting hotter day by day. The rain continued the whole day and by nightfall there were small stretches of water along Bukit Timah Road and a few other low lying areas in Singapore. No serious harm was done except that there were massive traffic jams all over because of stalled cars.

By next morning, the situation was disturbing as the water began to get higher and higher. Roads became impassable and certain villages were cut off from the main road. Immediately the Civil Defence. Force went into operation and a few rescues were carried out successfully. No human lives were lost though there were a few reports of animals being drowned. By the afternoon of 13 June 1992, the situation was serious and the army was called to assist the Civil Defence Force.

Several schools throughout the Republic were set up as flood relief operation centres and Singaporeans turned up in large groups. The ladies set up kitchens and started cooking and the men argued with the Civil Defence officers to be allowed to take part in the rescue operations. Naturally the officers were cautious and tactfully told them that their offer was appreciated but not really required.

The operations continued the whole night and it was a relief that by the next day all the homes were evacuated. The schools became temporary homes to more than three hundred people. What was really heart warming was that the people in the surrounding estates flooded the schools with dry clothes of all sorts to make sure their neighbours were warm. The Singaporean spirit of neighbourliness was high and everywhere.
