Penang Island

My mother comes from Malaysia, from Penang to be more accurate. So naturally we visit Penang once every year. Usually we take a bus and travel all night. This bores me as we see very little. I am actually forced to sleep along the journey. We see the beauty of Malaysia only on the way home, when we travel during the day.

Penang is an island which is slightly smaller than Singapore. It is linked to the mainland of Malaysia by a bridge. The bridge is only a few years old and before that everyone traveled to Penang by ferry. In fact many people still do this as it is costly to travel by the bridge. My family and I usually take the ferry. While in Penang we stay in my maternal grandmother’s house. It is a big house and one can easily get lost in it.

The minute we arrive in Penang, all our relatives who live in the island will come to visit us. They will then take turns to take leave from their work and take us around Penang. In this way we have the opportunity to see a lot of the island. It is still very much a green little island, which Singapore must have been like many years ago. Parts of Penang are slowly urbanizing and I shall be very sorry when it becomes another big city. The parts of Penang I like most are the fruit plantations and especially the durian plantations. It is only from my frequent visits to Penang that I realised that there are many varieties of durians. I enjoy going up to the plantations and buying durians from the farmers themselves. They are happy to serve us and we can eat our fill at very low prices.

I am happy that my mother comes from Penang. I shall always have a home on the beautiful island because of this.
