Write an essay about a visit to the beach.

The Beach

Living on an island country like Singapore and being surrounded by water has at least one advantage: We are never far from the sea and the beach. As for me I live in Bedok – just one bus away from Changi Beach. Changi beach had the reputation of being the biggest and most beautiful beach in Singapore. This is not true anymore because the beach is now much smaller. Most of it had to be sacrificed to make way for our fabulous Changi airport.

My trip to the beach is almost weekly. The last time I went there was exactly one week ago. I alighted at Changi Village to buy some refreshments and then walked to the beach. It was a Saturday and the usual noise of excited children greeted me. It was high tide and the children were having a splashing time. I looked up at the voluntcer lifeguard’s post. A lifeguard sat there, his eyes fixed on the group of children.

I looked at the beach, there were a few people lazing around. A family was busy putting up a tent. Everyone was giving a hand. They were having a hard time, fighting against the strong wind but obviously enjoying themselves too. Then I saw an unusual sight, there was a group of teenagers having a barbecue in broad daylight. I was quite sure that this primitive form of cooking was only done at night. Well, teenagers have always been rebels anyway, so I shook my head at their rebelliousness and went on.

Finally I came to the spot I loved. It was a clump of Casaurina trees. I went up to one of them and felt its bark lovingly, in greeting of an old friend. Then I nestled down under the combined shade of the clump of trees and laid out my beach chair. I took out my copy of “The Old Man And The Sea’ and flipped the pages.I loved to read by the beach, though I know that many people would probably go to the beach for a hundred other reasons.
