Keeping Pets

From the birth of civilisation man has domesticated animals and kept them in his service and for food. Some of these actually became man’s servants and friends. Yet Some other animals, man began to rear as pets. These were mainly as companions and the closest we can come to a reason for this is man’s vanity for wanting to keep animals in captivity and perhaps to transfer some of the animals’s beauty to his home. Such animals included colourful fish and birds. Most of the animals kept as pets are those which were easily domesticated and which were ‘cute’. Unusual pets are also kept. There are records of dolphins, elephants and even crocodiles being kept as pets.

One other reason that people keep pets seems to be that they want to give and receive love from animals. It is common to see lonely persons, especially women, keeping little dogs or cats as pets. It has been found that this practice has a therapeutic effect on humans.

Children who live with pets learn to appreciate animals and come to an early understanding that animals have their place in the world. This is a good thing as when they grow up, they can be expected to be kinder to animals.

Not everyone benefits from keeping pets. Often we find that people who are too busy with their own lives want to keep pets to feed their egos and to be ‘with it’. Sometimes the result is disaster. The animals end up by not being well fed or even beaten because of alleged ’misbehaviour’. Then again not all animals are suitable as pets. Domesticated animals are suitable as pets but not creatures from the wild. Hence it is cruel to keep animals which are not domesticated as pets. They cannot be trained to adapt and usually live miserable lives.

Hence, keeping pets is all right only if we have the time and if we keep domesticated animals and birds as pets.
