Almost from the day we are introduced to the world of education, we are being told again and again of the importance of reading. It is true that with school education just enough to be able to read well, we can all educate ourselves. In fact if we consider carefully, to teach us how to read is the main aim of language education. Once we have gained that, the whole world of education is literally at our finger tips.

Reading expands the mind and keeps us informed of the latest developments in everything. It is impossible for the schools to teach us everything there is to learn about any subject. Hence, we can carry on learning and leamn much more and beyond what we learn in school only through reading books. It may be argued that television and radio too provide information. However, these two sources provide digested information and no challenge at all to the intellect. The opinions formulated are others’.

In addition to giving us information, reading develops our imagination. It has been repeatedly acknowledged by scientists that the faculty of imagination is the greatest that we have. Albert Einstein even said that imagination is more important than intelligence. In the case of developing our imagination, reading takes us far beyond anything that television or radio can. Since we need to develop imagination in order to get the best from reading, it goes without saying that the more we read the better our imagination becomes. A well developed imag ination is a boon in every area of life.

Reading, to those of us who indulge in it, is a great pleasure. If we get into the habit of reading for pleasure, we will have a lifelong hobby which can be enjoyed anywhere as long as there is a light source.
