THE CAREER I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE UP

From a young age, I have always wanted to be a soldier. At first it was mostly the influence of the movies and, of course, the fact that my father is an army officer had something to do with it. I was very impressed with soldiers on parade, in training and in war. Now that I am older, I am definite that it is going to be my career- except that now my reasons are more mature.

A life in the army is not necessarily a violent one. It is clear to me that a successful army is not necessarily a fighting army, but one that keeps war away or prevents war. We in Singapore have reason to believe that ours is one such army. A similar army is the Swiss army which has not gone to war in more than a hundred years. Hence what we have in the army is not just a trade that kills men as an ideal, but rather one that keeps would-be aggressors away.

In the army, there is none of that routine stuff that office work is made of. I hear that no two days are alike. Everyday is full of new situations and soldiers’ bodies and minds are stretched to the limit. Since I am very fond of the outdoors, I will enjoy army life as I believe that a lot of the training is done outdoors. Keeping close to nature, sleeping out under the stars and learning how to blend into nature are the better part of soldiering life. With the constant meeting of new challenges, I can expect my mind to be alert always. I believe that humans get the best out of themselves when they are faced with challenges.

The spit and polish attitude of the army also appeals to me. I realise that everything is done at the best. Cleanliness and neatness is very important and of this there is a lot in the army. Also important is punctuality and system in everything that is none. How else would the army be able to deliver such beautiful parades on National Day and on other occasions?

Finally, the army works at preparing youths for defence, though we know that war is not likely but always a possibility. I like this as there is no greater way to pay the nation back for all the things it has done for me and my family and friends than to be ready to defend it against anything.

For these reasons I would like to take up service in the army as a career. Within the army I would like to be an infantryman. I believe that it is the most crucial of all the services and one where the action is.
