Water

Two thirds of the earth is covered by water and as if there is some connection, 70 percent of the human body is water also. Without water we will just burn to death. Next to air, water is the most important substance in the world for all of us. We drink water all the time as it is an essential component of our bodies. The balance of water in the body is vital to its continued functioning. Water is lost from the body when we perspire and when we urinate. This water has to be replaced. There is a danger point beyond which it is dangerous for us not to replace the lost water.

Water in the body is necessary to form most of the tissues including, and especially, the blood cells. Water also cools the body through perspiration. It is water that cleans up the internal parts of the body — especially the stomach and the intestines. A lot of other organs, like the kidneys, need water to keep them clean and germ free. Our daily needs also require a lot of water. Besides cooking, water is also necessary to wash and to drink.

Water is free from nature and nature has set up a remarkable system that ensures that we have a steady supply. This is the water cycle. Heat from the sun absorbs the water into the atmosphere and the water vapour forms clouds. Then the clouds condense and the water returns to us as rain. Especially the farming communities are dependent on the rain for their water supply. Since we are all dependent on the farms for our food, it is clear that indirectly too we are dependent on water.

An important source of our food is also water. It is from the sea, lakes and rivers that we get fish. Besides, animals and plants too depend on water for their lives. Since we are dependent on them, it is easy to see that every direction we turn, we see that water is not just part of our lives – but life itself.
