I was lucky to get away with my life. My father had warned me many times about hanging around there at night. I was out to prove something, I wonder what. I had seen the type of people hanging around at the shopping centre at night. Something within me did warn me tht I was a fool to get into a mess like this.
I bought a burger and sat down to enjoy it. As it turned out I did not. As soon as I sat down I became aware of a few pairs of eyes looking at me intensely I felt my heart in my mouth. One of the guys came over to join me. I looked down and ate my burger quietly. I could see that he was looking at me. He called his friends to come and join him. They did, there were three of them. They sat close all around me. I became afraid.
“Why did you stare at me just now?” asked a small looking fellow. I swallowed. I knew that this was the usual way for them to pick a fight. “Im sorry,” I blurted out, “I did not mean to.”
“Better be careful,” the little fellow continued. “I nodded and got up to go. “Do you have any money?” asked the most aggressive looking of the lot. I shook my head. Then he took me by the shirt. “Better give me whatever you have, or you are dead,” he said with a snarl. I took out my wallet and opened it. The little fellow grabbed it from my hand and opened it. Then he took whatever I had, even my fare card. One of the others grabbed my hand and took off my watch.
I looked about me desperately and suddenly saw a familiar dark blue. “Help!” I yelled with all my might. The gang looked where I was looking and then got up and ran. Too bad for them, it was a blind alley and the police officer was not alone. They caught them after a short chase. Out came the cuffs. The gang threw y wallet and watch away, to get rid of the evidence, But too late, the police had seen them.
I gave my particulars as if I was in a daze. Suddenly it was all over. What a lucky escape I had been through. I whispered my prayers to whichever God it was who had sent the policeman at just that moment.
