AN UNLUCKY DAY

I had been brought up not to believe in luck. I did not believe in astrology or in palmistry or in anything else connected with luck. I believed that I was the master of my fate. This had been what my old man drummed into me from the time I was a kid, though I knew for a fact that he bought 4-digit tickets every weekend and hoped for it to strike. Since I did not believe in good luck, naturally I did not believe in bad luck also. So how did I have such an unlucky day?
It began by me getting up early as usual to the sound of my alarm clock. As usual too, I turned back and went to sleep— for another ten minutes. I slept for half an hour instead. That started it all. I dashed into the bathroom and half cleaned myself and dashed off to school. Of course I had missed the 6:30 am bus and had to wait for the 7:00 am one. It came soon enough, packed to overflowing and passed by without stopping. I tried to hail a taxi. Nothing happened. Taxi’s don’t usually stop at bus stops. They did not. I decided to wait for the bus again and managed to clamber aboard the 7:30 bus. I was the only school boy on board and I felt everyone looking at me. As soon as the bus stopped outside the school I dashed to the classroom. I would apologise I thought. I would eat humble pie. I would beg to be forgiven. Teachers were kind souls — usually. The silence was deafening. There was no one in class! Then I remembered — assembly. I had an idea: I would sneak into the hall.
I left my bag in the class and crept along to the hall. I made it to the back door of the hall. No one Saw me. I smiled to myself and turned the door handle They were singing the school song. I could hear them. I would sneak in quietly and join in the singing. I smiled to myself. I pushed the door gently. There was some dummy leaning on it. I tried again, harder this time. The door yielded. I stepped in and looked at the figure who had been standing behind the door.
I saw myself looking straight into the eyes of Mr Salim – the Discipline Master. Talk of an unlucky day!
