A HIKE

“A hike?” I said, not very sure that I had heard right. I had indeed heard right. My father was up to his tricks again. He had his own weird ideas of what was entertainment. He was looking at the map now. I peered at it in despair. He explained that it was short hike, only about 14 kilometres. We would not be going through the jungle, but along a jungle path. The scenery would be beautiful ... we would see birds ... we would see snakes ... lizards. Strangely enough mother was with him. She agreed straight away and told me that I was to dress in jeans. “14 kilometres!” I yelled. ”Nothing for a strong young lady,” she said cheerfully.
So we set out on a beautiful Saturday morning from Macritchie Reservoir. Our destination: Bukit Timah Hill. I looked at the couple with me. My mother held her man by the arm. She was looking forward to it. We had just gone about three km when it happened: It started to rain. No, we did not have any rain coats. Mother smiled at her husband. He grinned back and then they both grinned at me. I groaned. We were soaked to the skin and were walking in mud. My bag was weighing me down and I felt like lying down and dying. Yet this couple was smiling and laughing. I wondered how they could. Then suddenly it dawned on me. They were in love!
I looked up at them and decided to have fun too. I started to sing. True enough they joined me. As we sang we walked. The rain did not matter anymore. Then the rain stopped but we carried on singing at the top of our voices. We had never done this before. Then we laughed and told jokes. We were starving but did not care. I looked about me. The sun shone now and the birds started singing again. I looked about me and beauty was everywhere. I became aware of nature. I saw squirrels and monkeys and snakes. They were all beautiful and what was most beautiful: I was one with them.
Before long we emerged at a clearing and looked up. There stood Bukit Timah Hill. The Old Man broke into a run up the path. His wife decided to join him. I was not going to be left out and joined in too. We arrived panting at the top and collapsed in a heap. Then we took in the scenery. I looked at both of them holding on to each other. Then I went up and hugged them both. They held on to me. I realised that I was part of the deep love they had for each other. Then we linked arms and walked down singing all the way. People must have thought we were crazy. We didn’t care.
