Advertisements

Every day we are bombarded by advertisements whichever direction we turn. Vendors of all sorts of goods and services are fighting with each other and using all sorts of techniques to gain our attentions and sell us an item or a service. Many of the advertisements are of things that we need and want, and many others waste our time and some even seek to lead us astray. We cannot live without them but we must be very careful how we live with them.

Advertisements are usually honest attempts by the merchants to tell us about their products and services. In fact without them, we may not become aware of many of the latest products and services. When we decide to buy something, say a computer, we rely on advertisements to tell us what is the latest model in the market and what latest facilities it incorporates. This is free information to advise us. Without advertisements, we may make decisions based on incomplete information or have to go through more complicated ways before knowing what to do.

At the same time, it is important to realise that most advertisements seek only one end — to sell us the items. They are not usually interested in protecting our interests. Such being the case, most of them are not at all logical. They tend to play on our emotions. To buy anything based on a decision made through emotion is a very unwise thing to do. We must take every advertisement and be able to see through the emotional appeal and make a decision based only on reason. If we can do that we will not be deceived by any smooth talking advertisement and at the same time only take out the information we want from each advertisement.

In conclusion, it is clear that advertisements serve a purpose but it is up to us to be aware of what they are trying to do and make our decisions wisely.
