EXPLORING A CAVE

I read about it in the ‘Straits Times’. A new cave had been discovered in Johore. Nothing new according to me. Malaysia is a mysterious place and finding a cave there should not be such a surprise. I called Venu and told him that we had to go to the cave imme diately. He was my kind of man and agreed. Soon we were on our way. I spoke Malay very well and was the spokesman all the way. We had to ask our way about.

The old man that we stood before was happy to help. Typical of Malaysians he was happy when he could help. He explained that if he told us how to go, we would not be able to find the way. He would be happy to guide us – free of charge. I was not surprised; this was Malaysia. Sure enough he was right, we could not have found the cave without him. He pointed up the mountain and I saw that we had a hundred metre climb. Our new found ‘Pakchik’ decided to wait at the foot of the mountain. Venu and I went up. We reached the cave in an hour.

It was dark in the cave and we were greeted with the smell of guano — bat droppings. We braved it of course. We shone our torches and went in. There were many passages and we decided to do what Theseus did when he went to meet the Minotaur. We unraveled a ball of string as we went in. We walked in for about three hundred metres when we were aware that we were not alone. We heard noises. I was afraid and switched off the torchlight. Perhaps it is a bear I thought. Then someone shone a torchlight on my face. I heaved a sigh of relief. I knew for a fact that bears did not use torchlights.

It turned out they were Singaporeans too: two brave girls. We introduced ourselves and explored the cave together. We spent a full three hours in the cave and explored every comer. It was a great experience. Then we decided to leave and followed our string out. At the foot of the mountain, our Pakchik lay asleep under a tree. We woke him up gently and drove back home. The ladies went their own way.
