Safety First In The Home

It may be astounding to many of us, but statistics show that most accidents happen in the home. If this is even partly true, the old saying ‘As safe as houses’ does not apply anymore. Homes are the last places that we would expect accidents to happen. Perhaps this is why they happen. We are probably complacent and refuse to believe that there are a lot of dangerous and life threatening situations in every home. Can anything be done to make sure that homes are as safe as we would want them to be?

Since many accidents happen to children, it is here that the problem must first be tackled. Homes must be child-proofed. Everything that can cause even the slightest danger to a child, must be placed where it will not be accessible to children. Such precautions must be taken even in homes where there are no children, because there may be children visitors. All medicines must be locked away. It is also important to label medicines. There have even been incidents where adults have given poisons to children because they (the adults) could not read the labels. Therefore rules must be laid down to say who should give out medicines and who should not.

There have been instances of children drowning in buckets and bathtubs. It makes us wonder how these things happen. Bathrooms can be locked. There have also been quite a few accidents in Singapore where children have plunged from high windows. It makes a lot of sense to have bars on all windows and to lock up all the bars.

Adults too can get into accidents at home. We hear of people who try to climb through windows because they have locked themselves out of their flats, when all it takes is $25.00 to call a locksmith. Nasty accidents can happen if adults slip over toy cars, especially if the cars are on the steps.

Certainly we can reduce accidents in the home. The first realisation must be that we accept that accidents can happen anywhere. Also no one is so blessed that accidents cannot happen to him or her. The truth is accidents happen to anyone and anywhere — even at home.
