We do not know when in history man discovered sports. But even ancient paintings and carvings show that sports have indeed been a part of mankind for a long time. A part of man wants to make believe and play Hence till today, sports remains an important part of our daily lives. They are indulged in in every society – from the most civilised to the very primitive, though they vary in forms.

Sports bring people together and in these times of generally soft living, it provides much needed exercise. In schools it is a popular form of recreation to balance the brain work that we do so much of. If not for sports to balance up our academic activities, life for students will be very difficult indeed. Besides providing exercise, sports also develops a few other important characteristics in all of us. First of all, teams sports develops in us the realisation of the importance of working in teams. The concept of cooperation which we learn and use effectively in sports, builds into us a habit of getting the best in a situation through cooperation.

Sports is conducted internationally too. The aim is that through sports, nations will get closer together and make for better understanding and cooperation. Thus we get situations where even countries at war take part in sports events, though they do get back to fighting afterwards.

However, as it sometimes turn out, international sports often gives rise to unhealthy rivalry between na.tions. This leads to fights between supporters and between players. Though distressing, we cannot abandon the concept of international sports because of a few spoil sports. Perhaps in time they will become more mature and international sports will become truly peaceful events.

All in all, sports is an important aspect of life. It would certainly be a dull and lifeless world without it.
