Write an essay on use of the library.

The library is a fabulous storehouse of knowledge. In Singapore the National Library system ensures that there are libraries in every housing estate. Each library is well stocked with thousands of books in the four main lan guages of Singapore. Membership is free and all it needs is for us to take advantage of the libraries and make full use of the facilities. It would cost us a fortune to own all those books and even if we could buy them, where would we store them?

Each branch library duplicates the functions of the others, except for the central library which has a larger selection. The library is divided into the children’s section, the adults’ section and the reference section. Borrowing of books, for both the children and adults sections, is for three weeks duration. The reference section books are not usually loaned out and are meant for reference within the section only. Each time we can borrow up to four books. Arrangements have been simplified now, so that even if we do not have our library cards we can borrow books using our identity cards. All borrowers are responsible for the books they borrow. Lost books have to be paid for and an administration fee will be charged in addition to the cost of the books lost.

All books borrowed must be returned in three weeks from the date of the loan. Renewals may be made through the post or through fax transmissions. The date due may be extended to a further three weeks upon request, if no one else has reserved the book. Fines of ten cents per day per book will be charged for books returned after the due date.

Not only has the library thousands of books, but also computer terminals and audio visual aids. We can make use of the terminals to search for information and video tapes may be borrowed, for use at the library, and we can view movies. Besides these, the library also makes arrangements for talks on topics of interests and other activities especially for children.

It is entirely up to us to make full use of the facilities of the libraries.
