Write an original short story based on: ‘A dangerous invention’

A DANGEROUS INVENTION

When Dr Rahim invented the truth mirror, he did not intend that anyone should be hurt by it. He only wanted to use it as an aid to diagnose his patients. It was a simple thing and he had to use a combination of science and mysticism to perfect it. It looked like any ordinary mirror.

All he had to do was place the patient — blindfolded because he did not want him his patients to know any terrible truths prematurely — in front of the mirror and then looked into it himself. The illnesses that the patient was suffering from appeared in the mirror and Dr Rahim knew at once. This went on for a few months and the doctor began to plan to make more of them, so that other doctors too could apply his method. Dr Rahim was not selfish. He decided to try the method for a year before he began to make more.

Even the doctor was surprised when one day the mirror gave more than health information. It revealed the characters of the patients and what they intended to do. Since all his patients were good people, the doctor just kept the secret to himself.

Then one day when a man stood before it, Dr Rahim saw that he was an evil man and that he was about to commit a robbery. Without thinking about it, Dr Rahim told him, “Don’t do it!”

“Do what?” asked the man.

“Don’t commit the robbery that you have planned,” said the doctor kindly.

The man was taken aback and glared at the doctor. ”How did you know?” he demanded aggressively. The doctor kept silent. He was afraid of the man. The man closed the door and became rough. The doctor said nothing even though the man punched him a few times. Then the nurse ran in and the man took out a knife and threatened to kill her. In order to save her, the doctor told the truth. Immediately the man took the mirror with him and went out. It was obvious that he meant to do evil with it.

The following week, the doctor read in the newspapers that a few rich men were being blackmailed. Somehow their darkest secrets had become known and someone was using the secrets to get money from them. The story came to light when one of the rich men decided to call the police. It seemed that a man claiming himself to be a salesman had called on him and asked him to look into a mirror. Then the man had told him that he knew all his secrets and demanded money. The rich man had refused to pay and had called the police. Immediately, Dr Rahim realised that many of the rich men were probably paying the criminal without reporting to the police.

There was only one thing left to do. He went to the police. He knew that it was a dangerous thing to do,but he did not care what happened to him. He did not want his invention to be used for committing crimes. With the information that Dr Rahim gave the police, the blackmailer was arrested and sent to jail for many years. The first thing that the doctor did when he got back the mirror was to break it to a many pieces and throw it away.
