Write an original short story based on: ’A different type of courage’.

A DIFFERENT TYPE OF COURAGE

It was just like me to fall in love with a girl whose two brothers were champion boxers. I was not the boxing type; not even the sporting type. The nearest to anything in the area of sports that I had any interest in was chess. Morgan, the elder of Mary’s brothers said, and Thomas the younger agreed, that chess did not count as a sport.In fact they laughed non-stop for 15 minutes, and their father joined them, when I told them that I had played chess for the school team.

Mary’s father too had been a boxer when he was younger and was very proud of it. I was thus given a nickname by the family; Mary’s pet Chihuahua. I did not like it one bit and told my girl that I did not. She told me to ignore them; so I did. Mary loved me very much though and I her. As far as she was concerned three muscle men in the family was enough and she did not want one more. Her mother too liked me a lot; so I visited them every weekend. The three men teased me endlessly and I knew that they despised my lack of brawn. But I did not care; I still looked forward to my weekend visits.

One day as I was driving to their house on a Saturday I heard the siren of a fire engine behind me and drew to the side for it to overtake me. I looked ahead and saw a large cloud in the distance and knew at once that it was my darling’s house. I raced after the fire engine and arrived with it.

As I jumped out of my car I saw the whole family outside. Everyone was out there except Thomas. Seconds after I arrived I learnt that the man had gone in to rescue the family dog and was now trapped in the flames. Strangely enough the dog was standing there; it was obviously smarter than the hapless Thomas. Suddenly I realised that the two strong men were crying with Mary and her mother; for all their big talk they were helpless bundles of nerves, I made a quick decision and ran into the burning house, Mary and her family and the firemen yelled after me to come back but I kept going.

I think I was possessed by something; I knew that I was not myself. Instinctively I found Thomas by the kitchen door where he had been overcome by the smoke I still don’t know where I got the strength from but the next thing I knew I was half-carrying and half-dragging the hefty man out the door. I felt myself burning all over and vagucly remember falling down on my face.

I woke up in hospital and my beloved was holding my hands. Beside her stood her whole family; even Thomas He had recovered before I did. I leart that I had been out for two days. Then they told me that I had first degree burns all over but was all right. I noticed that not only the women, but all three he-men too, were shedding tears— big tears. It was my future father-in-law who spoke, ”You are a bigger man than all three of us, son,” he said hoarsely. “That’s my man you are talking about, Pa,” said my lady proudly, putting her arms around me. Thomas just held my two hands and said nothing. His gratitude was visible on his face as he looked into my eyes.
