AN UNEXPECTED ADVENTURE
It was my own men who had marooned me. They had become greedy for money and had taken over my ship and then marooned me on this desert island. We had come upon an island that were inhabited by a race of peaceful people. They were simple and it was their misfortune that there was a lot of gold on the island. The odd thing was that the natives did not know that gold was valuable. They used it like any other metal — for making tools. My men wanted to take everything they could from the natives. Since they were so peaceful it would have been easy. I did not allow this and insisted that whatever gold they took from the natives was to be paid for — in food, cloth and other things that they could use.
When we were on the open sea they pretended to be sorry and to agree with me so I dropped my guard and that was my mistake. Suddenly I woke up to a few men kicking me. My men had mutinied. The next thing I knew, I woke up on an island and did not know where I was. One thing though, they had left me my pistol, in case I decide to commit suicide. I was not worried about myself at the moment; it was those poor, peaceful islanders who were my main concern. The poor chaps were going to be slaughtered for their gold.
I survived for the next a few days and realised how Robinson Crusoe must have felt. Then a few days later I got the surprise of my life: My ship appeared on the horizon. At first I thought they were passing the island on their way home. Then I realised that they were heading straight for my island. I thought that perhaps they had changed their minds about letting me live and were coming back to put an end to me. I drew my pistol and grit my teeth in determination. If I was going, I was going to take a few of them with me.
Again I was surprised. The ship came nearer and the men put a boat over the side, and rowed right up to the beach. Then they walked towards me. I was a little puzzled as they seem to be in a sort of trance. Two of the stronger men even helped me to the boat. They had a faraway look in their cyes and did not say a word.
On board the ship, I looked around. Everything seemed to be in order except that every crew member seemed to be walking in a hypnotic trance. There was no gold on the ship. They had not taken any. The sailors obeyed my orders meekly and soon we were home. Only when they were ashore did they come out of their trance. None of them could remember anything except that they had landed on the island with their weapons and had demanded gold. Then the chief had chanted something. That was all they could remember.
I reported their mutiny to the authorities and all of them were sentenced to jail. They took their punishments meekly. I could only surmise that somehow the islanders had their own way of protecting themselves — without being aggressive. An ancient Chinese saying came to my mind: “True victory is the ability to defeat the enemy without fighting”.
