Write an original story based on: ‘An elderly woman’.

AN ELDERLY WOMAN

She had scen her family grow up and leave home one by one. Then her husband had died and left her all alone. She was comfortable and all her needs were taken care off by her faithful maidservant, who looked after her with total dedication. In addition, her children who were scattered all over the world wrote to her regularly, though none of them had visited her for the last few years.

Mabel was now old and feeble. As she walked up the hill she stopped several times to catch her breath. She had a melancholy look on her face; as if she did not care whether she lived or died. After half an hour she reached the church and then entered. She knelt in devote prayer as tears rolled down her cheeks. An hour later she resolved to do something. A smile spread over her face. Cheerfully she walked down the hill, hailed a taxi and asked the driver to take her home.

It was a week later that her three children all over the world received the urgent message. It was short and simple: ‘Mabel passed away’. Putting off everything, they contacted each other from across the globe. They realised that they missed their mother very much and cried aloud on the phone while trying to console each other. Then they dropped everything they were doing and, with their whole families, booked the earliest flights to Singapore.

Emily was the first to arrive and she rushed into the house only to be told by the servant, that the funeral was over the previous day. Emily let out a wail of despair and cried shamelessly while her husband and two children tried to console her. Then came Adrian with his wife and children and Christine, the youngest, with her husband. Seeing their elder sister wailing they joined in. After a long while, they consoled themselves and sat down in deep gloom. Back and forth went the stories of their childhood and what their mother had said. Fresh lamentations of despair broke out at intervals as they recalled the sacrifices she had made for them.

“How I wish the door would open and she would walk in now,” wailed Emily. Just then they heard a knock at the door and Adrian went to open it. Outside with wide grins on their faces stood their mother and the maidservant!

“My God, Ma!” screamed Adrian and the others rushed to sce for themselves. Mabel just stood there and gazed at them. Then it dawned on them that she had done this to get them all down to see her. Adrian recovered enough to lead his mother into the room and sat her on the sofa. Then he burst out laughing and soon all the others joined in. Their mother did not laugh; she just glared at them.

“Must I die before you all show me how much you love me?” she asked severely. Everyone opened his or her mouth to come out with their excuses but Mabel waved them aside. ”We elders want your love when we are alive. Once you heard that I was dead, you dropped everything and arrived here in two days. Why can’t you make time to visit me once a year? Don’t you think I want to see all of you; especially my grandchildren?” she said softly with tears in her eyes.

They had no answers. Everyone just looked at her with tears in their eyes. Then as a body all three rushed to hug her. It was as if they had become little children again.
