“Turn off your radio”, shouted Judy upon entering the room.
“Mind your own business and it’s not noise but music!” replied Julian from his bed.
“Not again”, muttered Mrs. Tay aloud as she prepared the breakfast for the family. She was wondering why these two kids of hers were forever challenging and disagreeing with each other. Although merely a year apart, they were far from being close siblings. Playing the role of an incessant peacemaker, Mrs. Tay walked up to their room to see what the matter was. She found Judy glaring hard at Julian who was scowling in return.
At the breakfast table, Mr. Tay decided to take the family on an outing. It was a Sunday morning and the weather was sunny and simply beautiful. Julian opted for the beach but was immediately opposed by his sister who preferred the Zoo. Just as expected, a fresh argument arose.
Judy.
“The beach is too crowded on Sundays”, started
“The Zoo is so boring and there’s nothing new to see and we’ve just been there last month!” replied Julian in a defiant tone. Both folded their arms and refused to give in.
Mr. Tay was tired of this predictable scene. Becoming a little agitated, he scolded them for their habitual bickering with each other. Just the day before, Julian had complained that their godmother Sandy had given Judy a better git. She received a big doll while he had been given a toy car. They actually spent half an hour quar.relling over the gifts. Judy on the other hand became jealous when Mr. Tay allowed Julian to keep an exofic watch of his after it had broken down. She read it as a form as favourtism and insisted that the present watch he had would be hers the minute it broke down.with a note of finality – the family would head for the siblings had no choice but to submit to his authority.
In an attempt to end the argument, Mr. Tay decided Japanese Garden for a simple picnic that morning. The
Julian and Judy quarreled over trivial matters the next few days. This was not a new experience to Mrs,Tay but the constant attempts to solve their quarrels finally pulled her down. She was exhausted and fell ill on Friday.
Her sudden illness somehow knocked sense into the two of them. The doctor had explained that Mrs.Tay was suffering from physical fatigue and stress. Mr.Tay rebuked them harshly that night and said that they were partly responsible. Feeling remorseful and guilty,Julian and Judy had a mini’conference’ between themselves. They finally resolved to quarrel less as fearful thoughts of their parent’s death crept into their minds. They concluded with a write-up ‘pact’ to honour their agreement to each other
Fortunately, this ended their long period of incessant quarrels and peace ensured in the Tay family henceforth.
