You were invited to a kindergarten children’s party. Describe what happened there.

A PARTY FOR THE KIDDIES

Actually my sister or my brother-in-law or both of them were supposed to go; it was their daughter’s graduation. But they ‘had something on’ so I ended up attending my niece’s kindergarten graduation ceremony followed by the party. Frankly, I did not mind as Tinawas my favourite niece and I her favourite aunt.

I realised that it was an important day for Tina and her friends. So on the day of the ceremony I dressed in my best and arrived just as the kiddies were dressing up. The teachers were in command; but I realised that this was not for long. Frankly, I had not bargained for what happened. I waved to Tina and took a seat right up in front. Then I looked about me and noticed that none of the mothers were with me. Where were they? I decided to investigate. When I found them, I realised what was happening: The mothers were taking over the whole ceremony.

The teachers were brushed aside as the mothers rushed forward to dress their precious ones. Not to be outdone, I joined the fray. Handbags were opened and despite all the teachers’ protestations, the female kiddies were painted into all sorts of colours and shades. I grit my teeth in determination and opened my handbag: This was a Singapore teenager they were playing with. Within minutes I had transformed Tina into a little version of me. I stood back to admire my handiwork and then marched her proudly to the forming up area.

Then the children formed up and graduated. The ceremony was just perfect. I could not help noticing that all the girls looked like reduced photocopies, in full-colour, of their make up artistes / mothers. Following the graduation was the party. A lot of orders were shouted by mothers and teachers and everything done to make the party as prim and proper as possible. The kiddies did exactly as they were told, then a few of them — mostly boys — decided to brighten things up. Within minutes they took over and became — kids. Balloons were burst,horns were blown, water was splashed and many more activities generally frowned on, but enjoyed nevertheless.The teachers and mothers kept yelling orders but none of the children heard them anymore. The riot was complete. I approved.

I took a back seat and sipped my drink while enjoying the goings on. All the kids had a good time while all the mothers and teachers had headaches. After some time, the mothers got tired and dragged the kids home. “What spoil sports!” I thought. As for me, I stayed until Tina had enough. By that time she was too tired to walk and I had to carry her home. She slept all the way on my shoulders. I felt like a mother. It was a beautiful feeling.
