Zero

Nervously, I looked around me. Every one was busy working on their examination papers. The invigilator was engrossed in marking his books. I could not resist the temptation to cheat.

My heart throbbed rapidly. The boy who sat beside me held his paper high, but I still hesitated. The invigilator seemed to give me warning by staring at me every now and then. I quickly looked down and pretended to scribble something on paper. Then I inched sideways, hoping to catch a glimpse of my neighbour’s papers.

My body was shivering in fear as I knew that it was dishonest to copy the answers of others. But, I couldn’t help myself. I then leaned forward.

My friend, Kenneth, suddenly turned around and grinned at me. He then held up his papers and I began to copy his answers in haste.

“Time’s up!” The invigilator said. Sa I handed in my papers, an uneasy feeling passed over me.

Several days later, the results were out. I looked anxiously

At the monitor who passed me my examination papers. “Zero!Oh!” I cried, the whole class looked at me in silence. “But how can it be?” What about Kenneth? I copied exactly from him!”Kenneth looked triumphantly at me. “So you admit to copying mine? Sorry, I gave you all the wrong answers!” The truth dawned on me. Kenneth deliberately wrote the wrong answers for me. After I copied them, he quickly changed them back to the correct ones.

My teacher was taken aback and I nodded my head in shame. I was then taken to the principal’s office who scolded me good and proper.

My parents were informed. They were very disappointed in me. They reprimanded me and gave me a severe caning at home.

I vowed to myself that I would never cheat again. My teacher was kind enough to offer me an extra coaching so that l would be well prepared for the coming examinations.
